Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts is the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and tenth most senior U.S. Senator. He also holds senior positions on the Finance, Commerce, and Small Business Committees. In 2002, Senator Kerry announced that he would be a candidate for President of the United States, and was nearly elected President in a close contest against a wartime president.
Senator Kerry distinguishes himself on national security and international affairs as the ranking Democrat on the East Asian and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee and a leading expert on that region, including North Korea. He worked on a bipartisan basis to craft the American response to September 11th and has been a leading voice on American policy in Iraq and Afghanistan, the war on terrorism, the Middle East peace process and Israel's security. Under Kerry’s leadership, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is addressing the key foreign policy and national security issues facing the United States including Afghanistan and Pakistan, nuclear nonproliferation, and global climate change.
Senator Kerry has spent a lifetime fighting for veterans’ benefits, for extension of the G.I. Bill for Higher Education, and for treatment of PTSD. He has helped provide health insurance for millions of low-income children, improve public education, protect our natural environment, and strengthen our economy. Lt. Kerry volunteered in the United States Navy, and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. On his second tour, he volunteered to serve on a Swift Boat in the river deltas, one of the most dangerous assignments of the war. He was decorated with a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with Combat V, and three Purple Hearts.
Senator Kerry is a graduate from Yale University and Boston College Law School. He has worked as a top prosecutor in Middlesex County, Massachusetts and took on organized crime, fought for victims' rights, and created programs for rape counseling. In 1982, John Kerry was elected Lieutenant Governor and two years later was elected to the United States Senate. He is now serving his fifth term.
